“RESEARCHERS STUDY DEEP BRAIN STIMULATION FOR DEPRESSION”

A pilot study at the Medical School will assess the use of deep brain stimulation (DBS) in the medial forebrain bundle of the brain for treatment-resistant depression.

“DBS in the medial forebrain bundle has been studied in Germany with promising results. Our study will be the second time ever to target this part of the brain,” said principal investigator Dr. Jair Soares, professor and chair of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences. “People suffering with depression who have not responded to medications and electroconvulsive therapy are functioning poorly and are suffering. This could potentially really help them.”

To The Members of the Houston Psychiatric  Society,

Mental Health America of Greater Houston is looking for psychiatrists willing to see clients on a pro bono basis.  Our Information and Referral Department receives over 300 calls a year from Houstonian in need of mental health care but are unable to afford it.  Many of these callers are looking for a psychiatrist.  We ask that our volunteers see 2 clients per year for a maximum of 3 sessions each.   This is a great program for psychiatrist just beginning their practice or for those who simply want to give back.  In return for your generosity:

 You will receive a free membership to MHA

 We will invite you  to our networking/training  events

 Your information will put into our database for general referrals

We also coordinate services with organizations that are looking for psychiatrist to go onsite to see clients.  We have an urgent request from Freedom Place.  This is a safe haven for young girls who have recently been rescued from human trafficking rings.  They currently have 4 girls aged 14-17 years old and two are in need of a psychiatric consult.  They would like to find someone who would be willing to out there once a month.  At this point they are limiting this volunteering opportunity to female psychiatrist only.

If you are interested in helping with Freedom Place or to see pro bono clients in your office, please call Debbie de la Riva at 713-523-8962 X235.  You can also reach me at ddelariva@mhahouston.org.
